I just lost my fuzzy baby to cancer (also an inoperable tumor) on February 7. I was searching the web to find other people who understood my grief and that of my other ferret-Riki, when I stumbled upon your story about Hippie. Although I enjoyed reading about him, I cried my heart out also. I am currently trying to nurse Riki through his grief as well as do something about my own. Somehow and in some way, your story has helped me through the long hours tonight without my little Polly. She was almost eight years old and a bundle of love. She loved people and wanted to be held all the time. When I cuddled her, she'd give me ferrety kisses by the dozens. I've never seen a ferret who wanted to be held so much. She too was a rescue, but I was blessed to have her for 5 years. Thank you for sharing your story about your special baby.

Veggies aren't great for ferrets but they are better than starches and sugars. EVO is a top food. Want to feed the best? Wysong Epigen 90 Ferret. Starch free, least likely kibble to contribute to insulinoma in ferrets. Swollen vulva? Urinary tract infection or advanced adrenal disease which desperately needs Lupron or Deslorelin.

I just found this blog and like to tell you that there are more really great Ferret Foods on the market now. I have ferrets for 5 years and here in Germany we are lucky to have a company whose founders are ferretlovers themselves. The company name is Frettchen4You and they developed a special High Protein Low Carb Ferret Dryfood which simulates the natural prey ferrets would have for their food if they would live in the wild.
I started feeding another trie ferret dryfood when I got my ferrets but thru a ferret forum on the net I found out about this FERRETastic! dryfood and ordered it on the internet. Many ferret owners have written comments about that food in different ferret forums and all descriptions tell that the food changed the fur quality of their ferrets, the ferrets became more active and their poop was tiny compared to some other food which was fed before. My ferrets changed in the same way.
The label of the food gives the info, that this food was developed on the 90:10 % rule which means, that a ferret would eat 90% meat based ingredients and 10% plant based ingredients in its food. The company owners have also ferrets and started the company because they wanted to make the best food for ferrets at a reasonable price so that all ferret owners will be able to feed their ferrets the best food. The food has a total of 40% proteins where 94% of the proteins are based on animal sources. The total meat amount is 87%. ChickenMEATmeal (without water), TurkeyMEATmeal (without water), SalmomMEAL (without water), Reis, Chickenfat, whole fresh chicken, Salsmom Oil, Chickenliver, Rübenschnitzel, Vitamine, Mineralien, Brocacel, Yucca Extrakt,

I am a happy ferret owner who feeds his ferrets with this food and I do not get paid for this posting. All I want is that you know there is this food at least all over Europe available. I don't know if or when it gets imported to the US. The url of the company homepage is: www.frettchen4you.de and email is info@frettchen4you.de in case you have any questions.

To Dawn Flores: You should not ever feed a ferret anything that is labeled for dogs. Dogs have a much lower protein requirement than ferrets. Personally, like the blogger, I highly recommend Evo Ferret. My personal ferret kibble blend is 50% Evo Ferret, 25% Wysong Epigen 90, and 25% Wellness Core Feline. You will find that even if you only feed Evo ferret, as the blogger said the ferret will eat less. Ultimately, on a month to month basis feeding Evo is far more cost effective than feeding Purina Kitten Chow. I know this for a fact because I too used to feed Purina Kitten Chow. When breaking down Evo vs. Kitten Chow on a per ferret per day basis on an average weight of 2 - 4 lbs per ferret, Evo costs $0.18 per serving per ferret whereas Kitten Chow costs $0.66 per serving per ferret. When factoring in the other two foods I feed it costs more than Evo, but it still costs less than Kitten Chow. When you factor in the possibility that ferrets eating higher quality food also have less health problems, and thus less vet bills, feeding higher quality food then becomes an even better bang for your buck. I recommend finding a good blend for your ferrets because it is important that they get a full range of nutrients, and you won't have to worry as much about finding replacement kibble if one of the foods is discontinued by the manufacturer.

To cat: Creosote doesn't DO anything for ferrets except maybe kill them. I grew up in West Virginia, I know exactly what creosote is so allow me to enlighten you. Creosote is a byproduct of burning coal; it is a tar product. It is used as a wood preservative. If you've ever been on a railroad track you would notice that awful tar smell and black sticky stuff on the ties. That is creosote. It is flammable and dangerous. I have no idea what it would be doing in ANY pet food product.

Yes Pig's did get swollen but she didn't seem to suffer any. It can be a sign of adrenal disease, which is common in ferrets. Another symptom is losing the hair, which Pig also has had. Sometimes vets will operate and remove the spleen and then put ferret on steroids for the rest of his life. Pig did not have this treatment but has had a normal life so far, is actually our most active ferret, also our oldest at this point.

Well I know that my ferrets use their sense of smell to find out if I've given them fresh water or if there are any treats laying around. When they first wake up, they all run around the edges of the apartment, nose down, to see what's new. They're not really using their sight, but rather their noses. I've watched Pig run across the living room first thing in the morning, and stop dead in her tracks because she smelled a little bit of spilled water that's three feet away. They can really smell!

I'm not sure what creosote does for ferrets, but I know that the more protein the better, and the less starch the better. Kitten food has more carbs/starch in it than what is healthy for ferrets, which is why I switched to Evo ferret food. The list of ingredients is incredible...meat, veggies, nothing really artificial or starchy. Of all the ferret foods, Evo has the ingredients closest to natural ferret diet, and has the lowest cost as well.

I am currently looking for a better wet or fry food for my ferret. I was looking at Blue dog food because it has all the ingriendiants the ferrets need. But than I saw that it has creosote in it. What do you highly recommend?
Thank you
