Yes Pig's did get swollen but she didn't seem to suffer any. It can be a sign of adrenal disease, which is common in ferrets. Another symptom is losing the hair, which Pig also has had. Sometimes vets will operate and remove the spleen and then put ferret on steroids for the rest of his life. Pig did not have this treatment but has had a normal life so far, is actually our most active ferret, also our oldest at this point.

I just recently rescued a female ferret from certain death after it and a male mate were abandoned in a 95 degree heat wave locked in their two story cage by the apartment complex's trash dumpster. I am a 56 year old straight and well adjusted male (I think anyway) with an eleven year old tabby cat I've had since kitten hood, also a rescued critter. My point is this, I didn't plan on this addition to my home but as I live alone and she( I call her Tina as in Tina Turner because of her dancing antics) was so helpless the day she appeared on my doorstep and seemed to look up at me on my doorstep rug and say please please don't hurt me I am lost.... well I cannot bear to part with her now. She is part of my family now.

My problem is that some of my friends, family and even my employer have made comments that these ferrets stink and how could I put up with taking on the responsibility of another animal. I resent their comments that I am somehow unclean and lack good judgement because I decided to take of this little critter into my home to take care of her. I resent the implications that I must not be a "clean person" to own a pet that stinks like a ferret.

My usual reply to these clean freaks, is that the ferret would probably say that we humans stink much more than they do as their sense of smell is about 40 times more keen than ours and the ferret undoubtedly smells all of our body function odors more than we do theirs. One can only guess how a domesticated animal like a ferret perceives soap, perfume, cologne, medicines and other odors we humans wear.

As Tina being a rat like creature according to my employers and friends, she is also pure in her motives and most people I know are not. I like animals on average better than most humans I've met. So, am I demented for taking this little one into my home?

Anyway,

I'm absolutely loving your blog! My family is just moving our girl Loki into the house now that she's calmed down a bit (she was very aggro and untame when we adopted her from a shelter), so this is helping heaps with out preparation! We're also putting litter boxes in most corners until we see which few she claims.
Thanks, and please keep writing!
